Chris Young Hit In Head With Line Drive

As if being 17-30 wasn’t bad enough, the Padres starting pitcher Chris Young was hit right between the eyes with a line drive off the bat of Albert Pujols in the third inning of their 11-3 loss to the Cardinals Wednesday night. When the ball hit Young he fell to the ground and sat there for awhile in a daze. After Pujols reached first base he walked to the mound to check on Young’s condition. He was visibly shaken.

After the game Pujols commented, “When I hit it, I thought it was going over his head, but it hit him right in the face. There was blood all over the place and I began to pray about it and make sure it was all right.''

Young would walk off the field with some help and holding a bandage over his nose, his jersey was covered in blood. We would later find out his nose was broken, but other than that he seemed to be doing well.

We do have a link here for you if you want to see just how it all happened, courtesy of ESPN. Before you click the link to watch, I must warn you that some will find it disturbing, and it does include some blood.

Later in the same inning Pujols was headed to home plate as Padres outfielder Brian Giles’s thrown hit catcher Josh Bard’s glove perfectly. Pujols slid and took out Bard who was blocking the plate. This luckily resulted in just a sprained ankle, when I saw it I thought it might be broken. Pujols by the way was safe.

The Cardinals won the game on the strength of three RBIs a piece from Troy Glaus and Ryan Ludwick, and a two-run pinch hit home run from Rick Ankiel. Braden Looper got his sixth win of the year after working five innings and giving up three runs which were all provided by the Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and also had an RBI single in the fifth.

After the game Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa commented on the line drive, “``If he weren't so tall, the ball would have gone into center field. It was one of those freak things.'' Young is 6 foot 10 inches tall. Pujols added, ``It was a pretty tough night. After that, I couldn't concentrate on my other at-bats. I kind of had flashbacks thinking about that at-bat.''
Hopefully this will not have any long-term effects on Chris Young or Albert Pujols. It would be a shame for the game to lose either of them because they can’t get passed a freak accident and get back to what they do best.
