Will This World Series Be Like the Others?
October 28th 2008 18:06
From 2004 up to this very point, the World Series has lacked a level of excitement. Sure, the Boston Red Sox won in 2004 for the 1st time since 1918 but yet it was rather effortlessly over the Cardinals in a sweep. Now, wouldn't a struggle actually be a bit better than just seeing it end just like that? Even if the Indians had won the World Series without much of a challenge, it would still have that same feeling. The Red Sox drought ended that year and we are seeing Boston emerge as a power team in the AL East.
The following year saw the Chicago White Sox become the 1st AL Central team to win a World Series and for that franchise, it's 1st title since 1917. Of course, Chicago hasn't exactly been very successful in the division as they would have liked to have been. That series also ended in a sweep over the Houston Astros.
The following year saw the Cardinals go back to the World Series and then they defeated the Detroit Tigers but it was in five games. While not a sweep, you never really got the sense that the St. Louis Cardinals were a bad team and actually looked a bit out of it. The Tigers were overwhelmed and made you wonder how much effort was really put in by this team for victory.
Just last year we saw the most pathetic effort by the Rockies in that series with the Red Sox. Boston came back and it's going to sting for some time seeing the Indians knocked out and getting close to that World Series crown and still hasn't happened yet. Boston just went out and just picked apart a Colorado team that looked either scared to be out there or just one that wouldn't put forth an effort to win at least a couple games to make the series exciting.
This year however is looking to go in that direction with the Phillies picking apart the Rays and leading at a commanding 3-1 lead. I do however hope that Tampa does win at least one more game to get this to a 6th game. A 7th would be a miracle but at least 6 would be all right in my book. I'm a bit conflicted on who to root for on this because neither team is one I would root against so much or even bother with.
I do expect it to end probably tonight due to what would be a botched call with the game starting at the bottom of the 6th with Philadelphia up to bat and the game tied at 2-2. It's a weird situation and I just do not understand it. I guess what's done is done. As far as Philly having it bad, I think Cleveland has had it worse in the major sports but that is just me.
I kinda want Tampa to win this game and then see what happens from there. Whoever wins the series I applaud them in the end. I hope Tampa can show some more effort on the offense though because I really don't want to have to question them a bit like I've done with the Rockies.
