WHO AM I No.3
September 22nd 2008 09:43
The answer to the last Who Am I was indeed Ron Darling, who had a decent career as a pitcher, winning 20 more games than he lost. Unfortunately, the Texas Rangers, who drafted him, would never benefit from those wins, as he never developed much in the minors and they traded him for outfielder Lee Mazilli. Mazilli didn’t do much in Texas and was traded for Bucky Dent, who did even less.
Darling was born in Hawaii’s and apparently speaks Chinese as well as English. I wonder how you say “bad trade” in Chinese.
Here’s today’s WHO AM I:
They say the 30-win pitchers are gone, and I guess I’d have to agree. I came close one season. In fact, I have the most wins in a single season since Denny McLain last had a 30-win season in 1968.
Things were so close for me that year too, to get the 30-win mark. My team won 29 of the 35 games I pitched in, and one of my losses was by just one run. Oh what could have been.
Still, that was enough to earn me a Cy Young Award and I also got a second World Series ring. Which I guess is good because I had never even won 20 games before that year, and my high after that year was just 12 wins.
