Playoff time: A Look at the Urban Legends in Baseball

September 29th 2008 23:08
Ah, yes the playoffs have officially begun. The legends in baseball are just that, legends. You see teams that struggle for many years but yet you wonder why. You've seen things break with the Red Sox breaking their curse and so did the White Sox the past two seasons. Currently, the Cleveland Indians hold the record for the longest drought in the American League without a World Series victory. The Chicago Cubs this season have a chance to break the drought but I would not put them as easy favorites.

Urban Legends in Baseball

The Bay Area Curse is a legend that isn't well-known to mainstream people honestly. I never hear much about it but I will state that the legend goes that since the Giants moved from New York to San Francisco, this team has failed to win it all. 2002 was the last year and perhaps the last chance for now as that team has gone downhill. There will be a time it will end but it will not be for at least a couple more seasons.

A-Rod will probably be considered a great player that could never win the big one. Every team he has been on his entire career has seen him come up short. He was on the Seattle Mariners and didn't get the ring. Went to a Texas Rangers team and while he could hit, that team couldn't do much and not even make the playoffs. Now, currently with the New York Yankees and hasn't gotten the job done when needed. He is the jinx and whatever team he is on, as long as he is with them, he has yet to win the championship.

There is also the Indians curse and that need not be mentioned. Of course, Cleveland has a bigger issue than that with the Browns and Cavs not winning championships. That's another story but it goes like this: The Indians got hit with the drought the following season and has continued since. Allegedly it was due to the trade of Cleveland player Rocky Colavito that the team got cursed. At least, that is how the legend goes.
