May 21st 2008 10:32
Phillies 1 – Nationals 0
The only offense in the Phils-Nats game was a pinch hit bloop single to centerfield in the ninth inning off the bat of Phillies Greg Dobbs. The single scored pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett to hand reliever Jon Rauch the loss. The game was a pitching duel that saw both Cole Hamels and Jason Bergmann pitch seven scoreless innings. Hamels had eleven strikeouts, but it was reliver Tom Gordon that got the win, his fourth of the season. Brad Lidge came in to close out the ninth for his eleventh save of the year.
Astros 4 – Cubs 2
Despite Aramis Ramirez hitting a home run for the second straight day the Astros were able to break their four game losing streak. The reason was the bat of hot slugger Hunter Pence whose 16-game hitting streak came to an end last night. Tonight he a grand slam to supply the Astros with their only runs. He now has 18 RBIs in his last 18 games.
Other notes of interest:
Despite pitching 6-1/3 strong innings with five strikeouts and giving up just one run, and getting his first Major League win, Justin Masterson was sent back to the minors to make room for Bartolo Colon who is scheduled to make his first start Wednesday.
The Rangers failed to get an extra base hit for the first time all year in their 11-4 loss to the Twins.
Derek Jeter was hit on the wrist by Daniel Cabrera, and had to leave the game. Later Yankees pitcher LaTroy Hawkins threw inside at Luke Scott, his inside pitch apparently wasn’t located where he wanted it. Hawkins then threw the next pitch which was up and inside, near Scott’s head. This setoff a bench clearing, but no brawl. Girardi was out of the dugout quick enough to difuse a full-scale episode that would lead to multiple suspensions.
