Cubs 7 – Pirates 4
Alfonso Soriano proved again Friday that he should always bat the leadoff spot in the lineup. He led off the game with another home run, his 47th leadoff dinger, He then added a three-run shot in the second. He now has five homers this week. Cubs pitcher Sean Gallagher got his second start and first big-league victory. Kerry Wood notched his ninth save in twelve chances. The Cubs broke 1 million in home attendance in just their 25th game of the season, the fastest they have ever reached the mark.
Phillies 10 – Blue Jays 3
Phillies centerfielder Jayson Werth is going to wish that he played American League teams all the time. He connected for home runs in each of his first three at-bats, while also tying the Phillies record of eight RBIs. In his fourth plate appearance, he fouled out. He is the 18th Phillies player to hit three home runs in a single game. Jamie Moyer picked up the win after throwing 6-2/3 innings and giving up just three runs.
Rangers 16 – Astros 8
The Rangers hit six home runs to double up the Astros' total. Josh Hamilton drove in five while going 5-for-5 with two home runs. David Murphy, Chris Shelton, Michael Young, and :::takes big breath::: Jarrod Saltalamacchia all added home runs for the Rangers, who won the first game in The Lone Star series.
Other notes of interest:
Albert Pujols went 0-4 Friday. This ended his streak of reaching base safely in 42 straight games to start the season. Rick Ankiel’s nine-game hitting streak also came to an end.
Joe Saunders became the first seven-game winner in the AL after winning the first game in the “Freeway Series.”
