Weekend Baseball Wrap Up - Part II

Reds 6 – Indians 4
Going into this game it looked very interesting from a pitching standpoint. It was just the second time in history that opposing starting pitchers have had at least 6 wins and an ERA under 1.25. The other time was when Don Drysdale faced Bob Gibson in 1968. The matchup was also just the third time that both league’s ERA leaders have faced one another. Hideki Irabu (Yankees) vs. Al Leiter (Mets) in 1988, and Derek Lowe (Red Sox) vs. Tom Glavine (Braves) in 2002 wre the only other times. Hideki Irabu, now there is a name I haven’t heard in a long time. Wonder what he is up to nowadays. This time it was Cleveland’s Cliff Lee vs. Cincinnati’s Edinson Volquez. In the end the Reds completed their three game sweep of the intrastate battle 6-4 on the strength of home runs from Adam Dunn and Joey Votto. Dunn’s homer made it four straight games that he has hit one. Volquez did however give up more than one earned run in a game for the first time all season. Despite being swept the Tribe still lead the intrastate series 29-25 all time. The teams will meet again in Cleveland from June 27-29.
Red Sox 11 – Brewers 7
David Ortiz helped the Red Sox complete their sweep of the Brewers with two home runs and four RBIs. Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia also homered for the Sox. Hitting wasn’t the problem for the Brew Crew, Ryan Braun hit two more longballs, J.J. Hardy, and Prince Fielder both added their own home runs. It was the Brewers fifth straight loss. Their start Carlos Villanueva fell to 2-5 for the season. At one point he loaded the bases and then walked Julio Lugo to force home a run. In all he gave up six in four innings. Sox rookie Jacoby Ellsbury had set the franchise record Saturday with 25 consecutive successful steal attempts by a rookie, on Sunday he was finally caught stealing. It was Big Papi’s 29th multi-homer game as a Red Sox player, 31st overall, which puts him third in franchise history behind Ted Williams and Jim Rice.
Mets 11 – Yankees 2
Oliver Perez gave up just three hits in 7-2/3 innings to help the Mets complete the two game sweep of the Yankees. The final score says 11-2, but it should have been 14-2. In the fourth inning Carlos Delgado hit a three-run home run, which the umpire called a home run. After some complaining from Derek Jeter and a debate amongst the umps, they overturned the call. It was now ruled a foul ball. In the replay it was very clear that the ball hit the foul pole. By rule a ball that hits the foul pole is a home run. Willie Randolph ran out to argue to no avail. Later, third base umpire Mike Reilly who had originally called it a home run correctly said, “My three partners were adamant that the ball was foul. It was a tough call to make. We try to get every play right.” Jerry Manual, Mets bench coach, wasn’t happy with the call at all. He continued to heckle home late umpire Bob Davidson till he was ejected from the game. Friday’s rainout sets up an unusual circumstance. The Subway Series continues June 27-29 at Shea, and Friday’s game should be made up during the series. It will probably be part of a day-night doubleheader with one game at Shea Stadium, and the other at Yankee Stadium.
Other notes of interest:
Randy Johnson got his 288th career victory in the D-Backs 4-0 win over the Tigers Sunday. It moves him into a tie with Tommy John for 24th place all time.
Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome went 1-for-3 Sunday with a two-out RBI in the fourth inning. This isn’t very noteworthy, I just really like having to say his name. Alfonso Soriano DIDN’T hit a home run in this game.
Houston’s Lance Berkman went 2-for-5 Sunday, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. He is 36-for-66 during the streak. His average is now .399, which is closing in on Chipper Jones’s league leading .411 average. Berkman also leads the league in home runs with 16, and RBIs with 44 and is flirting with the Triple Crown as the month of May winds down.
