Soriano Breaks Hand in Cubs Game

The St. Louis Cardinals get lucky in some one else’s misery. The Cards found out that they will be without the best player in baseball, for at least three weeks. Albert Pujols has a strained calf. Plus pitcher Adam Wainwright is on the DL with a strained middle finger. The Cardinals are sitting 2.5 games behind the first place Chicago Cubs.
In tonight’s game between the Atlanta Braves and the Cubs, outfielder Alfonso Soriano was hit on the wrist with a pitch, and ricocheted and hit him just under/behind his ear. His ear and head are fine. His hand on the other hand is broken. Well to be specific, a non-displaced fracture. It happened in the second inning off a pitch by Jeff Bennett. Soriano left the game, and the stadium. Shortly after he was taken out of the game he was taken to the hospital for X-rays. He should be out for about six weeks, but you just never know with an injury like this. It could be 5 weeks, or 10 weeks. With someone like Soriano you would probably expect it to go to the shorter side of the span.
The Cubs are a good team, and a flexible one, they will be able to fill his spot in the outfield easily. I feel their problem will be trying to replace him in the leadoff spot. You can plug Mark De Rosa into the outfield simply enough, but not everyone is a Rickey Henderson or Soriano in the #1 hole.
The Cubs did go on to win the game 7-2 with former Relief pitcher Ryan Dempster pitching a gem of a game. He gave up just two runs on four hits while striking out eleven in throwing a complete game.
