Should Derek Jeter Be Given Long-Term Contract?
November 13th 2010 15:36
The New York Yankees are in talks with Derek Jeter and his agent about resigning with the Yankees. We all know a deal will get done eventually, but should the Yankees sign him long-term. Jeter has been a wonderful player for the Yankees, but there comes a time when you must plan for the future. Jeter needs to understand this as well. The Yankees should not give Jeter a contract longer than two years for a couple of reasons.
Derek Jeter is getting up there in years and an injury could claim him at anytime. Secondly, the Yankees do not want a long-term contract as eventually they need to move someone in his spot. If I was the Yankees towards the end of his next contract I would move someone else into shortstop on a limited basis to see if you can find a replacement. It is never easy to replace a legend like Derek Jeter and no matter how you handle someone will not be happy. Jeter is a class act and the Yankees should try to give a classy way to go out. A long-term deal though should not be on the table.
