Randy Johnson Ks 10, again

Big Unit Ks 10, Again

Randy Johnson is 44 years old, al but two of the Braves starting nine on Saturday were ten or under when he threw his first strikeout in the Major Leagues. The Old Unit didn’t let the youth get to him, he went out to the mound for the D-Backs and pitched 6 strong innings while giving up just one run. He ended up not getting the win as the Braves scored two in the ninth, but while Johnson was in the game he struck out ten batters.

This is the 210th time he has stuck ten or more out in a game. He may not have too many more 10 K outings left in him, but he doesn’t need all that many. The all-time leader in games with more than ten strikeouts is…can you guess?...yes you were probably right, it is indeed The Express, Nolan Ryan. Ryan did it 215 times in his long career. It took the Express 773 games to do it, this was only Johnson’s 564th game. Again, it is unlikely that at his age the Big Unit has five more games of ten or more strikeout in him, but it is also unlikely that he’d still be pitching at 44 after two back surgeries. The two next closest on this list you could probably also guess. They are Roger Clemens with 110 in 707 games, and Pedro Martinez with 108 in 381 games.

The Unit is also closing in on another milestone, this one he will certainly reach soon. He currently has 4,663 strike outs in his career. That is just nine behind Roger Clemens for second place on the all-time list. It will be more than 1,000 short of Ryan’s strikeout total, but is an amazing feat nonetheless. He is already certain to remain the most prolific left-handed pitcher in strikeouts for a long time to come, and is certain to be a future Hall of Famer. He also only needs twelve more victories to become just the 23rd, and probably the last, 300 game winner in Major League Baseball history.

Career Strikeout Leaders - Pitchers

Career 300 Game Winners

We will leave you with two questions for discussion. . .

Do you think anyone else will ever get 300 wins?

Do you think anyone will ever break Nolan Ryan’s record of 5,714 strikeouts?
