Phillies Put Up 35 Runs in Two Games
On Sunday the Phillies won their game against the Houston Astros 15-6 on the strength of home runs from Pat Burrell, Geoff Jenkins, and Chase Utley. As impressive a win as that was, the Phillies apparently wanted to top that effort on Monday.
Against the Colorado Rockies Monday the Phillies scored 20 more runs to win the game 20-5. chase Utley led the Phils again going 3-for-6 with a home run and driving in a career high six runs. Pedro Feliz added four hits and four RBIs, and catcher Chris Coste added a home run and four more RBIs. Utley’s home run gave him 16 on the season and ties him for the National League lead with Lance Berkman and Dave Uggla.
Amazingly this is the third time in Phillies franchise history that they have scored 15 or more runs in back to back days. They also did it in 1930, and in 1999 against the Cubs. The last team to score 15 or more in consecutive games was the Yankees in July of last year.
The air is obviously a bit thinner in Colorado. This is the seventh time in franchise history they have given up 20 or more runs in a game. This game was in Philadelphia, and was the first time they have given up that many on the road, the other six games were all in the high altitude of Coors Field.
This game marked a milestone for Phils 45 year old pitcher Jamie Moyer, he is now the sixth player to have won a game against all 30 current Major League teams. He joins Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Woody Williams, and former Phillies Terry Mulholland, and Curt Schilling as the only ones to achieve that feat. It was also Moyer’s 235th career victory, placing him just one away from tying Whitey Ford and Clark Griffith for 56th place on the all-time list.
They will look to continue their domination of the scoreboard on Tuesday, sending pitcher Kyle Kendrick (3-2) to the mound to face Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez (1-4).
