New Stricter Drug Agreement For MLB
May 23rd 2008 22:33
Today the Major League Baseball Players Association ratified a new tougher drug agreement. The owners had ratified the agreement on May 14th. They had hammered out the details early last month, finally agreeing on the plan on April 11th. Today was the last day they had the chance to ratify the agreement.
The agreement goes into effect immediately. It will mean more frequent tests and actually gives authority to the independent administrator of the program. That idea stemmed from suggestions made by George Mitchell back in December. It is the third time the sides have made major changes to the joint drug program since it was instituted in 2002.
As part of the agreement baseball commissioner Bud Selig agreed to not take any disciplinary action against the players implicated in Mitchell’s now infamous report.
I am sure this agreement will be amended many times over the next few years till they realize they need to be even more strict than what is laid out in this agreement. They need to take action to restore order to the game that now carries the stigma of “The Steroid Era”. I personally feel this can’t happen with Selig in power. I have never liked him and know many that feel the same way. He stepped in to fill-in till they found someone who is actually suitable for the position, not to fill it long-term. Regardless of who is in the Commissioner’s seat the game needs to polish its now tarnished reputation.
