Ramirez Makes History in Many Ways

Boston Red Sox left fielder, and former Cleveland Indian Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home run on Saturday, making him just the 24th player to hit 500 or more home runs in their career.

That however is just the tip of the iceberg.

It makes Manny just the third player to hit their 500th in a Red Sox uniform. The other two being Jimmie Foxx, and of course Ted Williams.

He also has the fourth highest career batting average (.312) of the 24 500 HR club members. The only players on the list with a higher average, yes I bet you can guess one or two of them, Jimmie Foxx (.325), Babe Ruth (.342), and of course Ted Williams (.344).

Ramirez also joins Eddie Murray and Frank Robinson as the only players to hit their 500th in Baltimore. Luckily the fan who caught the ball was Damon Woo, a Red Sox fan. He gave theball to Manny after the game. Manny said he will auction it off and donate the money to charity.

He is the 12th youngest player to reach 500, he just turned 36 on Friday. It took him 2,004 games, and 7,263 at-bats. His first 236 HRs came as part of the Tribe, and this was his 264th as a member of the Red Sox Nation.

The group that he joined that might be the most impressive of all is one that contains just six others; Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Frank Thomas, and Ted Williams. These are the other six players that have 500 HRs, 1,500 RBIs, 1,000 walks, 475 doubles, and a .300 career batting average. Now to me that is an accomplishment. He is certainly going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer someday, and at just 36 he could pad his numbers quite a bit before he has to call it quits.

Despite his eccentricities, Manny is still one of the best. As a huge Sox fan, I'm so glad that he's remained with the team, even during his "I want to leave, I want to stay, I want to leave again" phases
