Instant Replay Thoughts
September 5th 2008 12:52
As you all know by now, Major League Baseball has taken a step in adding Instant Replay. Now, this could work out if done properly. At this moment, it's going to be for determining whether a ball was hit fair or foul for a Home Run. Do not expect it to be used so much based upon that procedure. I think it was time to add it as too many mistakes were being made on that particular zone.
Before people start having a panic attack on balls and strikes being reviewed, let me state why it wouldn't and shouldn't happen. Besides the fact it is rather ridiculous, the big reason would be the Umpires would never go for it. Do you think for one minute they want that to looked at as well? Common sense in this says they would sooner quit than allow that to happen. That right there is something I seriously doubt anyone would go through with it.
I would however propose that baseball should have a time limit on how long can you review a play. If there isn't one, there should be one and I would go at the most two minutes. If a decision can't be reached by then, then the play stands. If it helps eliminate the most ridiculous stunts of managers running out making fools out of themselves, then that would be a good thing.
Don't worry so much about it going into the balls and strikes department. No need to get into a panic spree and declaring the Apocalypse is about to happen. As long as the owners, players, and umpires don't want to go through with this, it won't happen. If by some strange situation it happens, then you have no one to blame but the owners, players, and umpires. Why would you blame them? In order for it to happen, it needs to be approved before going through with it.
The NFL has it and it seems to work out. If it helps to actually get rid of a potential problem, then it could be good. As long as it isn't used just for specific teams getting special treatment, then it could work. The system isn't perfect and there is no replay system that is actually going to get 100% accurate. Even then, mistakes could still be made. So, yes in an ironic twist, you do have human error that exists.
Don't worry about human error as it will always exist. Baseball is not going the drain just because a little bit of technology has been brought into the mix. Don't expect it to go so soon. We shall see how it works overtime.

We have it here with the NRL and Cricket.
. . . and while it goes a way to correcting the injustices that sometimes creep into the game - the attrition rate of officials is certainly higher than it was 5 years ago.
You can only be made a fool of so many times.
Then again I guess big money is waged and careers made on these decisions . . .
Cheers
