Davis and Lester Inspire Everyone This Week

People living with cancer got a double dose of encouragement this week from Major League Baseball. In the past week we have seen Jon Lester who was treated for anaplastic large cell lymphoma at the end of the 2006 season threw a no-hitter on Monday. That game ended with the Red Sox beating the Royals 7-0 and a huge celebration with his teammates on the mound.
On Friday the Arizona Diamondbacks sent Doug Davis to the mound for the first time since April 8th. Davis was diagnosed at the end of March with thyroid cancer and recently underwent surgery to remove the thyroid. The surgery was a success, and doctors ruled him cancer-free earlier this month. He went 1-1 in two rehab starts for Triple-A Tucson before being activated from the disabled list to start today’s game.
Not only did he start the game, but he almost finished it also. He threw 89 pitches, and went seven strong innings while giving up just one run on five hits. He also struck four out before being pulled for a pitch hitter in the eighth inning.
The D-Backs offense provided a ton of offense in support of Davis. Five of Davis’s teammates hit home runs in the game, including leadoff hitter Chris Young who led the team with three RBIs. The win moved Arizona ten games above .500 at 29-19, good for a three game lead over the West Division rival L.A. Dodgers, and tied for second best in the Majors.
Davis commented, "It felt great. It was kind of hard to control the emotions sometimes because I'm excited to be back and I'm anxious to throw my pitches and I got away on some of the pitches and walked a couple, but overall that was the only downside."
These two guys are very inspiring, not only to those with cancer, but to everyone watching. The drive and determination, not to mention the love for the game, that it took to comeback from what they have face is just amazing. I am sure the season will be filled with more great stories like this from these two guys. Good luck to both of them.
